Doris Powell Inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame
Doris M. Powell, Morgan County, Ohio was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame by Gov. Ted Strickland on November 6, 2009. Mrs. Powell was one of only twenty former service members selected for the 2009 class. She served in the U.S. Women’s Army Corps in the Pacific Doris M. Mrs. Powell was one of only twenty former service members selected for the 2009 class. She served in the U.S. Women’s Army Corps in the Pacific Theatre during World War Two, and rose to the rank of sergeant.
Following her return from service, Mrs. Powell held Dual Memberships in American Legion Malconta Post 24 and VFW Post 4713. She was one of the first women to join the VFW. She was actively involved in both organizations and spent much of her time serving veterans. Her tireless efforts in numerous civic and fraternal organizations demonstrated her dedication to, and support of, the citizens of Morgan County. For 22 years, Mrs. Powell was a member of the Morgan Local School Board, where she served seven years as president and five years as vice-president. She was a past president and active member of the Morgan Lady Shrine Club, a member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women, and a member of the Morgan County Chamber of Commerce. As a veteran, Doris Powell set and example for others to follow by her patriotism and loyalty to her country. She passed away on October 20, 2008.
The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on November 6, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Columbus. Richard Powell accepted the award from Gov. Strickland on behalf of his mother. Edwina Campbell, a 52 year member of Malconta Unit 24 in McConnelsville, nominated Mrs. Powell for this prestigious recognition.
